Introduction: Why this conference, and who should attend:

Brain Inspired Cognitive Systems 2006 aims to bring together leading scientists and engineers who use analytic, syntactic and computational methods both to understand the prodigious processing properties of biological systems and, specifically, of the brain, and to exploit such knowledge to advance computational methods towards ever higher levels of cognitive competence.

Four major symposia are envisaged and these are organized in patterns that encourage cross-fertilization across the symposia topics. This emphasizes that BICS 2006 will be a major point of contact for researchers and practitioners who can benefit from not only the major advances in their specialist fields but also from the diversity of each other's views. Each of the four mornings is devoted to papers that will be selected for their clear novelty and proven scientific impact, while the afternoons will provide scope for researchers to present their current work and discuss their aims and ambitions. Debates across disciplines will unite researchers with differing perspectives.

As part of this conference we plan to have a Student Paper Competition. Students are encouraged to submit papers that will be peer reviewed. Accepted papers need to be presented at the conference. The organizing committee of the conference will select the two best papers for the award. First prize will be $100 and the second prize $50. Special discounts are available for students to register for the conference and will include CDROM proceedings. 

Selected papers will be published in follow-on Special Issues of prestigious International Journals. More details will follow.
